Discover the Magic of Puzzlewood: An Enchanting Adventure Awaits

Wow, This Place Is Real And In The UK!
Are you seeking an adventure that takes you far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life? Imagine a forest where reality blurs with the magical where every turn reveals ancient woodlands that seem plucked straight from the pages of a fantasy novel. If you’re someone who loves nature, history, or cinematic landscapes, Puzzlewood in the Forest of Dean is a destination that will transport you to another world.
Why Puzzlewood Captivates the Imagination
Puzzlewood is not just any forest. Tucked away in Gloucestershire, this otherworldly woodland has captured the hearts of visitors for centuries. It’s easy to see why J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings, is said to have found inspiration here. The moment you step into the lush greenery, it’s as if you’re walking through Middle-earth or the Forbidden Forest from Harry Potter. Even the rocky paths and twisting trees give off a mystical vibe.
Film & TV Locations: Walk Among Legends

Star Wars – The Force Awakens
The magic of Puzzlewood goes beyond its Tolkien-esque charm. The forest has also played host to some of the most iconic film and TV series of our time, from Star Wars: The Force Awakens to Doctor Who and Merlin. Whether you’re a film buff or a nature lover, Puzzlewood promises an unforgettable experience.
For those who dream of stepping into the scenes of their favorite movies, Puzzlewood is a must-visit. The forest has been featured in numerous blockbuster films and TV series, making it a natural backdrop for stories filled with magic, mystery, and adventure.
From the lush, green landscapes of The Secret Garden (2020) to the darker scenes of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Puzzlewood’s unique scowles and ravines create a cinematic experience as soon as you enter. Fans of Star Wars: The Force Awakens will recognize it as the eerie forest of Takodana, and for lovers of classic literature, Puzzlewood is rumored to have influenced J.R.R. Tolkien when creating the enchanting landscapes of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
Imagine walking through the very pathways where epic battles, magical quests, and encounters with mythical creatures were filmed!
Puzzlewood: A Natural Wonderland
Beyond its cinematic connections, Puzzlewood is an extraordinary natural wonder in its own right. The ancient woodland covers 14 acres and is a maze of pathways winding through moss-covered rocks and twisted roots. The geological formations, known as scowles, are a unique feature, dating back millions of years. These deep gullies, hidden caves, and rock walls give the forest a mysterious, almost primeval feel.
Walking through Puzzlewood feels like wandering through a living fairytale. Whether you’re a casual stroller or an avid hiker, the 1.2-mile trail offers plenty of opportunities to explore. The pathway meanders through a world filled with ancient trees, secret caves, and hidden nooks, all while being serenaded by birdsong and the rustling of leaves. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot a deer or two along the way.
Is Puzzlewood Accessible?
One question many visitors have is whether Puzzlewood is accessible for all. The trails are designed to offer a magical experience for as many people as possible but can be challenging in places. While some of the forest walk is relatively flat, the terrain can get muddy and slippery, especially after rain, and there are quite a few uneven steps, protruding rocks and roots scattered along the paths.
Puzzlewood might pose a challenge for those with mobility issues. While there are handrails along some of the trickier sections, as shown in the images above, the narrow and winding paths can make it difficult for anyone unsure on their feet and impossible for wheelchairs and pushchairs to navigate.
It’s a good idea to come prepared with sturdy footwear, especially if you visit during or after wet weather.
What Else Is on Site?
Puzzlewood is more than just a walk in the woods—there’s plenty more to explore on site. For families, the forest is a fantastic outdoor playground where children can let their imaginations run wild. In addition to the woodland trails, Puzzlewood features a willow maze, an indoor maze, and a variety of farm animals, including Highland cattle, donkeys, ducks, and chickens.
The Puzzlewood café is perfect for grabbing a bite after your woodland adventure. Whether you’re in the mood for a light snack, a cup of tea, or something more substantial, the café has you covered. You can also bring your own picnic and enjoy it at one of the many outdoor picnic tables scattered across the site.
The Downside: What You Should Know
While Puzzlewood is a magical destination, it’s not without its drawbacks. Some visitors have mentioned that the entrance fee can feel a bit steep, particularly if you’re visiting with a large family. Currently, tickets are priced at around £9.50 for adults and £8 for children. While this may seem expensive for a walk through the woods, many agree that the experience is well worth the cost, given the beauty, the cost of upkeep of paths and bridges and of course the uniqueness of the location.
Another downside is the potential for overcrowding, particularly during peak holiday seasons. Puzzlewood’s narrow pathways can become congested, making it hard to fully enjoy the tranquil, magical atmosphere if there are too many visitors at once. Pick your times wisely.
NO DOGS – Unfortunately due to the number of other animals on site and in Puzzlewoods no dogs are allowed, however, Puzzlewood website has some local doggy daycare links on the Puzzlewood official website here.
Our Puzzlewood Review: Is It Worth the Visit?
Without a doubt yes, Puzzlewood is one of the most enchanting places you can visit in the UK. Whether you’re drawn by the promise of exploring an ancient woodland, following in the footsteps of your favourite film characters, or simply escaping into nature, Puzzlewood has something for everyone.
Despite its challenges such as muddy paths and the occasional crowd Puzzlewood more than delivers on its promise of a magical adventure. It’s a place that will spark your imagination, whether you’re visiting with family, friends, or on your own.
Our visit to Puzzlewood was nothing short of magical from the moment we arrived. Parking was easy, and the short stroll to the entrance only heightened the anticipation of stepping into this mystical woodland that can be seen down in the valley beyond. Friendly staff greeted us warmly and handed us a map, inviting us to embark on a Roman coin treasure hunt, a fun and interactive way to explore the forest’s hidden gems. Ok, so the map is best suited for younger kids but it did help with finding hidden parts we may not have discovered otherwise.
As we ventured into the woods, we were immediately captivated by the enchanting atmosphere. Along the path to Puzzlewood, we encountered a variety of animals, adding to the experience. With no set route to follow, the treasure hunt became our guide, leading us to all the must-see spots within the forest. Though you could easily navigate the entire area in about 30 minutes, we found ourselves lingering much longer, mesmerized by the winding paths, ancient trees, and moss-covered rocks that seemed straight out of a fantasy world.
The café was bustling when we arrived, and unfortunately, by the time we were ready for a bite, the food selection was limited. Next time, we’ll be sure to bring a picnic and enjoy the serene picnic areas tucked within the grounds. Although we packed our daypacks with waterproofs in preparation for the unpredictable weather, luck was on our side, and we spent the day under clear skies.
Puzzlewood truly cast its spell on us, and we can’t wait to return for another unforgettable adventure!

What to Wear and Bring to Puzzlewood
When planning your trip to Puzzlewood, it’s essential to come prepared for the woodland’s often unpredictable terrain and weather. Depending on the season, packing a waterproof jacket is a must, as the forest can get damp, especially after rain. A sturdy rucksack will come in handy for carrying essentials like snacks or a picnic—perfect for enjoying at one of the scenic picnic spots. Make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes or boots with good grip, as the paths can be slippery and uneven, even in dry weather. If you’re visiting in warmer months, don’t forget suncream, a hat, and insect repellent, as the forest canopy doesn’t provide complete sun protection. Bringing a reusable water bottle is a great idea to stay hydrated during your adventure, and a camera is essential for capturing the magical scenery. Lastly, if you’re visiting with children, a small bag of snacks and hand wipes will ensure a smooth and enjoyable day.
