Best Parkas for Men

“In our opinion, the Helly Hansen Reine Winter Parka is the best men’s parka available on the UK market today. It offers a fantastic combination of warmth, waterproofing and undoubted style at a price which isn’t too eye-watering.”

Helly Hansen Reine Parka

If you live in a country where the winter wind quickly penetrates through to your nether regions like a cold icicle, then a good parka is a must-have coat to have in your wardrobe. I’d say that the UK certainly qualifies.

The best parkas are rugged and durable and you can easily find waterproof and windproof options online. However, in our experience it pays to look closely at the market to get the best parka for your outdoor needs. For example, what is the weight vs warmth vs cost vs material quality trade-off?

A parka is a long-term investment which will keep you warm on those cold days, but can be a reasonably expensive acquisition – however, whilst saying that, some of our the best parkas we’ve tested (see below) do not break the bank. You really do need to focus on the choice of materials, pedigree of manufacturer and the size, weight and dimensions of the parka before hitting the checkout.

There’s also certain specific features which can make all the difference on a cold walk. For instance, people with poor circulation and prone to frostbite certainly need parkas with hoods. The job of the parka is to help you avoid two main enemies: cold fast-moving air, and moisture. These are extreme during the winter season, and so you need a coat which can deal effectively with their attacks.

What is a Parka?

A parka is a long jacket, often reaching the knees which uses thick enough insulated material to wear on top of your normal clothes and still keep you warm. There is often an integrated hood which is fur-lined and can be fully zipped up to create a ‘polar expedition’ look. Please see our parka buyer’s guide below for more information.

Parkas are among the most functional and fashionable coats available. They are excellent for people who want a balance between looking great and being active. So, when a lightweight jacket’s insulation isn’t enough, the best parkas for men can be the gear you need to stay protected in colder climates.

Helly Hansen Reine Winter Parka

Helly Hansen (HH) have an immense history of over 100 years of providing warm winter clothing for challenging conditions.

The HH Men’s Reine Winter Parka is a classic of the genre and at a pretty affordable price in our opinion.

It has all the features you would expect from a men’s parka as well as a great fit and a stylish cut. What’s more, it is available in six different colours, from a fairly dull grey and black through a subtle green to a fairly bright yellow (‘straw’), blue or red.

Key Features of the Helly Hansen Reine

Let’s talk details – the Reine parka has the full fur trim on the hood which is a must for any self respecting parka coat – of course, this is not real fur but it certainly looks and feels like it.

All zips on the Reine are proper YKK, and we loved how the main front zipper goes all the way up to under the chin, keeping that cold winter air out. The front zipper is a YKK ‘Vislon’ which is made of injected plastic and just refuses to snag. This is so easy to zip up, even when your hands feel like ice blocks.

Helly Hansen Reine Parka Mens faceThere are multiple large pockets available, from two massive ones down at the lower front left and right, to two angled zipped pockets on the chest. You’re not going to run out of storage space. In addition, there are a couple of stash pockets inside the coat which are great for hiding valuables away in.

In Use

Helly Hansen have chosen Primaloft Rise for the insulation on the Reine parka, and boy does it do a great job at keeping your heat in. This is a warm jacket! Primaloft is used by many of the high end clothing manufacturers (e.g. Hugo Boss), and for a synthetic down it works really well without making the coat seem too bulky.

I really liked the storm flap which HH have included on the front – this covers the zip when you’re out in the elements, and further stops cold air getting in. The coat is covered with a DWR layer (durable water repellent) and so is waterproof and breathable, something that you often don’t get on parkas from other brands.

Helly Hansen have added little design touches everywhere which as an outdoor enthusiast I really appreciate. From the ribbing on the inside of the cuffs to the adjustment mechanism on the hood to help fit it to your head. They’ve thought of everything you’ll be needing.

At 1360g, this is not a lightweight coat, but in my opinion it looks great. Helly Hansen make it in five different sizes, and we found that the sizing is pretty much spot on. I’m 6ft3 and found that an XL was just about perfect.

Overall, this is our favourite parka on the market at the moment for the price. Definitely worth trying out.

Pros

  • Great looking parka
  • Waterproof, windproof and breathable
  • Primaloft keeps you warm!
  • Nice design touches
  • Great Colours To Choose From

Cons

  • 1360g, but you don’t expect a parka to be lightweight

Thanks to Jack Wolfskin’s extra heated insulation style, the men’s Glacier Canyon Parka is extremely warm due to the jacket’s excellent heat retention.

Furthermore, wind-blocking microfiber cuffs are included in the design. And a drawcord fixed at the waist allows further adjustment for a better fitting. You can remove the hood entirely from the jacket when not in use. Also, you can detach the faux fur trim if you prefer not to use it. An assortment of pockets on the sides can conveniently hold small items while you are on the move. Also, the fabric will withstand strain caused by your bag or pack straps because this is the durable oxford version.

The fabric on the outer part of the Jack Wolfskin Glacier Canyon Parka is exceptionally durable. It is insulated with recycled synthetic fibers to generate additional warmth. The North Face Zaneck Insulated Parka

The North FaceMen's Zaneck Insulated Parka 2The North Face Zaneck Parka is great for winter escapades because it protects you from harsh weather while warming you up inside. The storm flap gives you an extra layer of protection, keeping all undesirable weather elements out. At the same time, the full-length center-front zip keeps out cold winds while you can adjust the jacket’s ventilation openings as you wish. Also, the adjustable hood is quite comfy and elegant, ensuring that you look stylish in the cold season.

As the name suggests, the North Face insulated parka is made of insulating materials with excellent waterproofing, keeping you warm and dry all winter. Furthermore, you can compress this parka without compromising its excellent warmth-to-weight ratio. We also love the jacket’s full-length center-front zip that hardly feels stiff while in use. For additional weather protection, there’s a storm flap with some hidden snap buttons attached. The quilted lining helps to increase user comfort. In addition, the adjustable hood with detachable faux fur trim completes your elegant look regardless of the cold.

If your budget is a bit higher then you may want to upgrade to the North Face McMurdo parka which uses more luxurious material with a great combination of insulation (550 down) and water resistance.

Fjallraven Men’s Nuuk Parka

Fjallraven Mens Nuuk Parka 2The Fjallraven Mens Nuuk Parka is an expensive but exceptionally high quality parka from Fjallraven, one of the top outdoor brands in the world.

The Nuuk is a mid-thigh length parka with a synthetic lining that provides incredible warmth and comfort on even sub-zero temperature days. It provides the best combined protection from the cold winds and rain that we’ve seen, while the supreme micro loft insulation keeps you warm even in freezing temperatures. Therefore it is the ideal winter garment for extremely cold weather conditions. This gear is recommended for snow storms, and it’s designed with a detachable hood and comfortable fleece inside the synthetic fur trimming.

You will find an array of pockets on this parka. There are two huge zipped breast pockets, a pocket that holds media players on the sleeve, two bellow pockets, and hand-warming pockets at the hem. The inclusion of these general-purpose pockets on the Fjallraven Men’s Nuuk parka is one of the desirable features we like, but that’s not all. We found two mesh pockets, two media player pockets with earphone openings, safety pockets, and a Napoleon pocket inside the parka. Then, the ribbed knitting at the neck helps keep cold draughts away. It also has sleeve cuffs with hook and loop closures.

With its sturdy canvas exteriors, biodegradable down fill, and removable faux fur hoods. Fjällräven parka is the perfect parka for exploring city streets during winter. The parkas outer lining features a Fjallraven’s characteristic G-1000 waxed polyester and cotton combination. It is tough, but in our experience not 100% waterproof in the biggest downpours. While it will keep you dry for most of your stay outdoors, the parka will absorb water that soaks through in some areas, and can become quite heavy. However, you can easily wax it to make the Nuuk parka completely water-resistant.

The Fjallraven Nuuk may not be the ultimate option if you want a technical parka using real animal fur. But if you’re looking for a synthetic and rugged parka which is fashionable enough to wear in town, the Fjallraven is an exceptional coat.

Fjallraven Mens Nuuk Parka

Pros

  • Durable
  • Utilitarian but still stylish
  • Various pockets

Cons

  • Can take on water in the heaviest downpours

Buyer’s Guide — Things to Consider When Buying A Parka

Here are a few factors to consider before buying a parka:

  • The Jacket’s Length

Parkas are available in different lengths. Longer designs are available as winter clothes, while cropped jackets are sold during the warmer seasons. Generally, your choice is influenced by your preferred style, the weather, and the occasion. A winter parka, regardless of style, should overlap the pants. This closes up any gaps keeping you warm.

Parkas usually have long zippers because of the jacket’s length. However, experienced designers don’t run the zipper to the end of the jacket when it is long. Moreover, a front zipper design is easy to operate without leaning over and allows you to stride freely.

  • Material Quality

Confirm that the parka’s outer shell is water-resistant by looking at the label. Also, look at the featured components and type of fiber sewn into each layer. Then check for a two-way heavy-duty zipper with an overlaying storm flap to repel cold winds. Many people prefer a waist draw-string to a belt because they believe it gives the parka a better fitting for their body. While you may be tempted to buy the synthetic fiber design, we suggest the down jacket version.

The synthetic fiber lined jacket is rugged, however, continuous compression will eventually destroy the synthetic fibers, compromising performance. On the other hand, a down jacket can last decades if properly cleaned, stored, and cared for, making the cost much more acceptable.

  • Thickness of the Fabric Walls

To stay warm during winter, you should buy a parka made of thick natural fabric. Wool, fleece, and goose down are some of the best materials used to make the jackets because these materials retain more heat even when wet. Natural fabrics are breathable as well. A parka made of 80% wool and 20% nylon holds heat nicely while allowing perspiration.

We suggest that you choose a parka with detachable vests and hoods to get the best of both worlds. As a result, your parka will be more adaptable, and you will have a complete look for the season. The hoods on winter parkas are usually lined with faux fur. This keeps snow from blowing in your face, and it also traps heat, which makes the hoods an essential feature. Also, the most popular parkas feature long arms (overlapping gloves) that end in cuff gaskets (our favorite) or a hook and loop.

A winter parka isn’t complete without insulated hand pockets, which have a warm, lofty feel. These pockets trap warm air from your body heat in a chamber that has been enhanced by insulation. There are two types of insulation available: down and synthetic. Currently, goose down is the most popular animal-based insulator. You can’t go wrong if you evaluate the brand’s rating by assessing the loftiness and fill power to gauge quality.

Down fill ranges from 500 to 650 fill, with high-quality down tips reaching 800 fill. Jackets with a higher fill power mean you’ll pay more money, but it doesn’t always imply you get a warmer jacket. To boost warmth, a thicker jacket may feature a low-quality down.

  • Fit and Style

These decisions are frequently based on personal preferences. More casual jackets feature a tailored cut, muted colors, and a less sophisticated feel. Parkas with the best design may be worn over a light shirt or flannel to stay warm.

You may want to avoid parkas designed for mountaineers because those versions are more about features than repelling the cold. Your choice should be parkas that stack well, allowing a base and mid-layer to be worn underneath. The hood should fit over your head or helmet if you have a factory job. There should be enough allowance so you can adjust the fabric without obscuring your vision. Because the hood’s insulation is often thinner, you should consider wearing a head warmer.

If you’re on a budget but need to spend time outdoors, go for a parka best suited for your activities. For example, you shouldn’t waste money buying a parka designed for the city when you live in the countryside. It’s overly bulky and lacks the functionality you’ll need for walking or climbing.

We also recommend that you try out any winter parka before purchasing because it is a long-term investment. If you don’t have access to a local store, Amazon Wardrobe lets you pay for what you keep and offers free delivery on returns.

  • Budget

The cost of an excellent parka is determined by the quality of its features. For instance, features such as double zippers, wrist gaskets, faux fur hoods, and good insulation increase the price. However, you are purchasing more protection and longevity. If you only need the parka for a few cold days in February, you can save money by getting a lighter, loose-fitting jacket that you can wear underneath. These jackets cost roughly $200. However, if you’re constantly troubled by the weather, please buy a parka designed for extreme winter conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. Are parkas waterproof?

Parkas are typically made of waterproof materials. The insulation can range from more conventional materials such as down or wool to modern designed textiles such as primaloft insulation. However, not all parkas are waterproof, so read the product description.

2. What is the standard length of a parka?

A parka should be quite lengthy. It often features a fishtail hem that became popular during the Korean War. Here’s the tip, choose a jacket one size bigger than your shirt size. A parka should not be overly tight, according to a general consensus. It’s also a good idea to choose a parka that you can lay over your clothes.

3. Are parkas fashionable?

Absolutely! Parkas have recently made a comeback in the fashion world, particularly in terms of style. During winter, parkas are by far the warmest clothing available. You can look cool and trendy while staying warm.

 4. Why do parkas have fur?

The fur lining serves a practical purpose. Hoods with fur lining help to keep your face and neck warm by reducing heat loss. The warmth it provides depends on the size, type, and diameter of the fur lining.

5. What’s the difference between a parka and a jacket?

Simply put, parkas are longer (falling below the waist) and thicker than jackets, and typically integrate a fixed fur-lined hood. Some parkas reach down to the upper thighs or knees, while others fall midway. Jackets, on the other hand, are simply long enough to cover your waist, and are often worn as part of a layering system.

Conclusion

Even though winter is inevitable, we can make better preparations to stay warm and comfortable when the season comes. For instance, you can follow the tips in this post and buy a parka a little bigger than your normal jacket size. Then you can easily stack proper clothes underneath.

Also, feel free to use the information you’ve just read about the best parkas for men to make a more educated decision. Whether you want a stylish design or something rugged, there is a parka for you.
