Lankeleisi X3000 Max Review – More Is More for this 2000W Folding E-bike

Two motors, 95Nm of torque (per motor!), a huge capacity 48v20ah battery with more than 80 miles range – we just had to ride this folding e-bike monster from Lankeleisi…

What we like about the X3000 Max: Fat tyres that roll over anything, great 80+ mile range and of course that massive thrill of 2000W max power and all wheel drive!

What we don’t like about the X3000 Max: It’s a heavy bike at 37kg and difficult to move when not riding; key slot is underneath and difficult to locate

Lankeleisi X3000 Max

When reviewing this bike, I couldn’t help thinking about a quote by the legendary Swedish guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen:

“People say that less is more… but how can that be? It’s impossible… MORE IS MORE!“.

The Lankeleisi X3000 Max has applied the same principle to electric bikes. You thought 1000W was enough? You were wrong.

The X3000 Max has an electric motor in both the front wheel and the rear wheel. Each motor would be a badass on its own – 1000W and 95Nm of torque. But powered together in all-wheel drive mode at max power, it’s like you’re riding on the back of a banshee as you scream across your private estate.

Yes that’s right – this bike isn’t allowed on public roads in the UK – it’s simply too powerful without it being licensed and insured. The legal maximum power for pedalecs/ebikes in the UK is 250W average power and a 15.5mph (25kmph) – pretty pathetic when you think about it – you can ride faster than 15.5mph on a leg-powered road bike! The X3000 Max also has a twist-throttle on the right bar grip – something else which isn’t allowed on an ebike in the UK.

Anyway, just like with electric scooters, people will still buy ebikes like this for ‘private use’ and take the risk that it may get confiscated by the police – do your own research, and always be prepared for the worst to happen.

Back to the review…. We’ve had the X3000 Max for a month of testing now and so have learnt everything there is to know about it – strengths and weaknesses. Read on to find out more….

Size and Dimensions of the X3000 Max

the rear view of a lankeleisi x3000 max ebike with trees in the backgoundFor the nerds among us (I count myself as one), let’s dig into the bike specifications first. You can check out our table below which lists all the main components and specs.

The X3000 Max has a 6061 aluminium alloy full suspension frame. Really for ebikes you cannot beat aluminium – it’s strong, lightweight and cheap which is exactly what we want. It also makes a bike which is very stable for riders and is rust-resistant. Great for blasting those off-road  tracks!

It’s extremely practical too due to the pannier rack on the back and huge mudguards which do a very good job of keeping mud and crud from covering your pristine lycra – or is that just me!

The X3000 Max is built for adults who are between 5′ 6″ (170cm) to  6′ 3″ (190 cm). As you’ll see in the video above, I’m actually above the max height and as a result my legs do not fully extend at the bottom of the pedal cycle – however because of the power on tap (more on that later!), this was never a major issue.

Folded dimensions

This is not a particularly big bike – in fact, it’s been designed as a portable bike which can fold up into fairly small dimensions: about 39 x 39 x 27.5 inches (99 x 99 x 70 cm). When unfolded, it’s about 44 inches (112cm) from the ground to the top of the handlebars. It can easily be tucked away in your garage and at a push would fold up into a big car boot (especially an estate car).

Weight

The weight is where the bike is not particularly user-friendly. It weighs a meaty 37kg, and actually when I used my bathroom scales it was more like 38kg. This is not simple to pick up at all in either its folded or unfolded state. You’ll probably need two people. Equally, if you run out of battery power then I wouldn’t particularly want to push it very far home!

What’s In The Box?

The bike comes delivered in a huge box and is mostly assembled with a few exceptions. The front wheel needs to be carefully positioned and bolted in place, and the whole process takes about 30 minutes with allen keys and a spanner that is included in the box. Check out our animated gif below – I love how the bike walks itself across the floor like an alien… 🙂

Let’s Talk About The X3000 Max Motors

The X3000 Max features a hugely powerful front and rear dual motor drive system with 2000W total power output. The motors utilize 48V 1000W high-speed brushless technology to generate exceptional torque (95Nm), but having two of these things obviously contributes quite highly to the 37kg weight. Lankeleisi use a star gear design in the motors to improve energy conversion rates. This results in low energy consumption and quiet operation, with extended range, enhanced speed and hill climbing capabilities versus standard hub motors.

What I found great about the bike is that you don’t have to ride with both motors on – you can choose front wheel only, rear wheel only or both. To be honest I found on grass that the front wheel and dual-motor options led to some wheel spin on the front. I preferred sitting on the saddle and just powering up the rear wheel. It’s still plenty at up to 1000W!

Battery

a close up photo of the Lankeleisi X3000 Max battery installed within the bike casingLankeleisi has opted for a high-capacity 48V 20Ah (960Wh) lithium-ion battery pack using the latest Samsung 21700 cells. Completely integrated into the frame for a streamlined look, the pack boasts water and dust proofing along with dual circuit protection for safety. Riders can expect an exceptional range from a single charge – up to 43 miles (70km) in pure electric mode (i.e. throttle only) or an impressive 80+ miles (130km+) using pedal assist. I’ve been riding it for a few weeks and still have charge left!

Suspension

The Lankeleisi X3000 Max is a full-suspension mountain bike. The front suspension is oil-sprung which gives the bike great absorption at the front end to keep a steady ride no matter what the terrain is doing under the wheels.

The rear suspension is also oil sprung and allows a max load weight (i.e. you!) of up to 200kg (31 stone approx). Having rear suspension on longer rides makes a huge difference to comfort even on smooth tarmac.

Combine the suspension with the great big comfy saddle and you have yourself a very comfortable bike.

Brakes

Not surprisingly given the top speed, the Lankeleisi X3000 Max is supplied with front and rear DYISLANDDe-energized Hydraulic Disc Brakes to slow and stop the bike when needed. Disc brakes are usually very durable and can handle muddy and wet conditions easily and will continue to have great stopping power.

Gears

Shimano is the brand of choice for the Lankeleisi X3000 Max with a variable 7-speed Altus transmission system. The gear shift was pretty smooth in my testing, and actually you don’t need to change that often with so much power available. The chain rings are a classic combination of 1 front ring and 7 at the rear. The gears have the SIS (Shimano Indexed Shifting) i.e. the click that can be heard when shifting up or down a gear to give that warm feeling the bike is in the correct gear.

Tyres

The X3000 Max comes with fat 4-inch tyres which have an aggressive tread pattern for traction on loose or uneven ground. Their width also allows lowering tyre pressure for cushioning and grip across rocks, dirt, mud or sand. The tyres are really confidence-inspiring and I enjoyed blasting around in the mud on this bike because of them.

Lights

Because this is an electric bike, it makes sense to include integrated lights – a huge motorcycle-type LED headlight at the front and a neat red light at the back. They’re both controllable from the panel on the handlebars but cannot be turned on or off individually. I really like the lights, mudguards and rack and think they really help make this a useful day-to-day proposition (on your own land of course!).

Battery and Charging

a picture showing the battery removed from a Lankeleisi X3000 Max e bikeThe X3000 Max gets its juice from a 48V lithium-ion battery having a total capacity of 20Ah (amp hours). This is 960Wh (watt hours) of total energy storage (48V x 20Ah = 960Wh).

A high watt-hour rating means a higher amount of pedal assist you can get in a certain power mode – this in turn equates to a longer distance you can travel. The 960Wh from the X3000 Max is a very large capacity, offering over 80 mile range with pedal assist

The bike comes with a 3 amp charger which can fully charge the battery from flat to 100% in about 7 hours. You can charge the battery either installed within the frame of the bike, or remove it to charge away from the bike.

The battery uses Samsung cells for excellent lifetime and temperature resilience. You cannot really get better cells in an ebike.

Display and Power Levels

A view of the Lankeleisi X3000 Max LCD screen showing the speed and distanceLankeisei have used a rather nice, colour LCD instrument panel on the X3000 Max which ensures critical ride data is always at your fingertips. The interface and control panel is intuitive and clearly presents speed, battery level, mileage, power mode, and more. The control panel allows easy adjustment on the fly when you’re riding. It’s all IP64 rated against water and dust ingress. This keeps things running smoothly even in wet conditions.

Screen Safety

Unlike the Lankeleisei RV800+ we reviewed recently which has flat handlebars, the X3000 Max has more ‘BMX shaped’ handlebars. This is great for the screen because it is situated in the ‘nook’ of the bars and is therefore protected from damage if you crash the bike.

The screen is surprisingly quite visible in bright sunlight, and I was impressed with the functionality on offer.

UK Legality

Let’s get one thing out of the way before we start – the X3000 Max is not legal on UK roads as it stands. It’s too powerful and would need to be properly registered, taxed, insured and ridden with a motorcycle helmet on. It is possible to do this, but would cost some time and money to achieve. In my view this is overkill from the government, but the law is the law.

That being said, I regularly see people riding powerful ebikes and e-scooters around on the roads, but they are at risk of getting their vehicles taken by the police, and possibly losing their driving licenses. If you had an accident involving one of these bikes then in my opinion (I am not a lawyer), the consequences could be worse.

However, if you have access to private land then a bike like this is perfectly fine – you simply ride it at your own risk.

The Lankeleisi X3000 Max In Use – My Thoughts

I’ve been riding the X3000 Max on some private land I have access to, where I do alot of wild camping. I use my campervan to transport the bike in a folded up state because I don’t own a bikerack which can take the 4-inch fat tires.

The first thing that strikes you with the Lankeleisi is how heavy it is. It’s possible for me to just about lift the 37kg off the ground, but not for any distance. When it’s folded up it’s even more difficult to lift because there aren’t any convenient hand holds anywhere. To get it into the campervan for transporting takes two of us to complete the move – just something to be aware of.

I really like the look of the ebike. It’s got a ‘Mad-Max’ apocalyptic Cyberpunk feel to it with that big front headlight and slate grey appearance. The saddle is comfortable although I’m slightly above the max height of the bike – this means that my legs don’t full extend at the bottom of the pedal stroke – not the end of the world with this much power on tap.

Let’s talk about the power. I’ve been testing the bike in the winter months and as a result there has been alot of mud. If you ride the bike in front-wheel drive mode then you get almost continuous wheel spin – not much fun. Rear-wheel drive is much better. This is because the weight of the rider is over the back wheel which gives grip.

I found that for nearly all my riding that 1000W from the rear motor alone was all I needed to get around with a big smile on my face. Switching it to the 2000W dual drive was also fun, much faster and more dangerous (in my view). It also didn’t get rid of the wheel spin. For me, the front motor is a little bit excessive and probably not required unless you’re really into motocross or similar – the X3000 Max becomes like a capable moped/motorbike.

This extends to the twist-grip throttle which can help you set off without pedalling at all, and feels very motorbike-like. Again, this is not legal in the UK because it does not deactivate above the specified 3.7mph. On the X3000 Max it can take you right up to 31mph, but it’s alot of fun!

All the components work very well except for the brakes on my bike. I found that the disks were a bit spongy and at high speed they took a while to stop it on wet ground.

I like the saddle, suspension and riding position – it’s very comfortable and easy to get around on. I also really like the integrated lights and rear rack – very useful. There are no squeaks or rattles, and the motors are quiet.

Time will tell on the reliability of the X3000 Max – so far it seems like you are getting alot of bike for the money, and if you have a legal place to ride it then you’ll have alot of excitement coupled with practicality.

Conclusions

The Lankeleisi X3000 Max is an interesting proposition for a bike. It’s loaded with power, is surprisingly practical (folding, lights and rack) and is a lot of fun to ride around. For the money, it’s amazing value for the amount of gear you get in the box as well as the bike itself.

However, for my use, the power is excessive and not actually legal on UK roads without a lot of documentation (type approval) and extra expense via the DVLA. I cannot ride it on the road, and so for me personally it is of limited use – there’s only so many times I would want to ride it around my friend’s field.

I actually found that I preferred riding the bike in rear-wheel drive mode because I didn’t get the wheelspin then which I kept getting through the front wheel drive and dual-drive modes, so in a way it may be more sensible to buy the less powerful X3000 Up which is £600 cheaper and only has one motor and slightly reduced range.

That being said, this bike will appeal to some people and I cannot knock them for that. It really is bonkers and offers a lot of fun in the right circumstances.

8.5Expert Score

This electric bike (almost motorbike) has too much power for me personally but could appeal to some riders looking for maximum thrills. My recommendation is to go for the less powerful X3000 Up, but you cannot even ride that legally on UK roads without type approval and insurance. Overall these bikes can only really be ridden on private land which limits their usefulness. Still, it is alot of fun......
