What we like about the Rohan Eos: Warm; Stylish; Packable; Great hood; Decent value.

What we don’t like about the Rohan Eos: Lack of inner pocket

As winter approaches in the UK, it could be time to consider upgrading your outerwear to stay warm during the cold months ahead. One essential piece of gear that every outdoor enthusiast should consider is a quality down jacket. In this review, I’ll be taking an in-depth look at the Eos down jacket from Rohan.

The Eos is a midweight down jacket specifically designed for versatility across a range of activities and temperatures. It comes in 5 different sizes and 4 color options – Highland Green and Stratus Blue for men, and Eclipse Blue and Raspberry Pink for women. Beyond keeping you warm, the Eos is stylish and reasonably lightweight at 570g (for the Women’s size L). It’s a practical choice for the UK climate that can handle everything from winter hiking to casual everyday wear.

Rohan is one of Britain’s leading outdoor brands known for making performance-driven gear purpose-built for UK conditions. With its reputation for quality and the Eos’s well-balanced design, this seemed like an ideal jacket to try out.

Over the following sections, Alison and I will be sharing our insights from extensively testing the men’s and women’s Eos in the icy cold November weather. We’ll cover details like sizing, construction, real-world performance, and finally our considered verdict on the pros and cons.

Let’s get DOWN to it! Haha!

Colours and Sizing

The Rohan Eos down jacket is available in a range of sizes and colours for men and women.

Women get sizes S to XL, covering bust measurements from 90-95cm up to 110-115cm. The women’s colour options are Eclipse Blue and Raspberry Pink.

The men’s sizing runs from S to XXL, fitting chest measurements starting at 91-96cm for a small, up to 122-127cm for double extra large. Men can choose between Highland Green and Stratus Blue.

Having multiple size increments allows you to get the right fitted feel based on your proportions. The colour options provide versatility to coordinate with existing outdoor wardrobes. The women’s Raspberry Pink offers a fun pop of colour while the Eclipse Blue is more neutral. The men’s earthy Highland Green blends into nature, while Stratus Blue has an icy vibe.

Our Eos choices and sizes

When we chose our jackets, my wife Alison opted for the women’s medium (M) size as she normally wears a 14. With a 39.5 inch bust measurement, the medium’s listed fit of 37.5-39.5 inches seemed ideal. She went for Eclipse Blue.

I went with the men’s large in Highland Green. With a 42 inch chest measurement, the large’s listed range of 42-44 inches was a good match.

For both of us the sizing seemed pretty spot on, and I wouldn’t recommend getting a size bigger or smaller – you can trust Rohan’s size guide on these coats.

Key Features of the Rohan Eos

The Rohan Eos is a premium down jacket built to provide maximum warmth for cold weather adventures. Constructed with 700 fill power goose down insulation, this lightweight yet cozy jacket is perfect for active pursuits in the hills. Let’s take a closer look at the materials, construction, and technical features that make the Eos such a versatile cold weather companion.

Materials

The outer shell and lining of the Eos are made from 100% polyester using recycled fibers, making this a sustainable and environmentally-friendly jacket. It is insulated with 700 fill power goose down, which refers to the quality and loft of the down. 700 fill power represents one of the higher levels of quality down available, with superior warmth-to-weight ratio and compressibility compared to lower fill-power or synthetic down options. A Durable Water Repellent (DWR) finish coats the outer fabric, while the down fill itself has a hydrophobic coating to provide protection from light rainfall. Just don’t rely on it in a storm – you’ll need a waterproof jacket on top.

Construction

Rohan have used a baffled construction and box wall design for the Eos. This helps prevent cold spots and maximize insulation efficiency. The down fill is divided into baffles or compartments to keep it evenly distributed instead of bunching in areas. This ensures consistent warmth coverage across the entire jacket. The box wall design reduces compressed areas near seams that could allow heat loss. The Eos also has a stretch binding inside the sleeve cuffs and hood opening to seal in warmth.

Features

The Eos has several technical features tailored for cold weather performance.

  • The hood is very padded and can be adjusted using a cord at the rear to cling to your head
  • An adjustable hem drawcord can be tightened to seal in warmth and prevent heat loss around your waist. For easy adjust-ability without exposing skin to the cold, the hem draw-cord is accessed through the hand pockets.
  • A brushed microfleece lines the interior of the two zippered hand pockets, keeping hands warm while also providing storage.
  • There is an additional external zippered chest pocket for safeguarding small items.
  • The Eos has a cozy microfleece-lined collar which keeps your neck warm in the biting winds and precludes the need for a scarf. The zips are well made, and the main front zip can go right up to above your nose, keeping heat in.

Insulation and Pack SIze

With 700 fill power goose down, the Eos offers premium insulation and heat retention with very minimal weight (620g for men’s L, 570g for women’s L).

At the time of writing, we could not find out the actual weight of the down in the coat, but it feels fairly substantial and padded. The high loft provides efficient warmth for its reasonably light weight.

Rohan down is RDS-certified which means it is ethically sourced as a byproduct of the food industry rather than live-plucking.

A DWR treatment applied to the down boosts weather resistance and helps maintain insulating performance in damp conditions.

Packsize

The Eos jacket packs down surprisingly small, with a total pack size of just 2.5 liters. This is thanks to the use of goose down, which compresses very efficiently compared with say synthetic alternatives. The small pack size makes the Eos easy to stash in your backpack or luggage, whether heading out for a day hike or a longer trip. As a lightweight and compressible jacket, it takes up very little room when not being worn.

Weather Protection

The polyester fabric’s DWR coating causes moisture to bead up and roll off the surface, offering protection in light precipitation. While not fully waterproof, this improves weather resistance for occasional wet conditions while still allowing vapor transmission to prevent overheating. The jacket’s down fill has gone through a hydrophobic treatment to help maintain loft and warmth if exposed to moisture.

In Use: Our Experiences

This autumn has been bitterly cold in the Midlands of the UK, and a warm and versatile down jacket has been essential for enjoying hillwalking. After putting many miles on the Rohan Eos across various conditions in October and November, I can give my initial feedback on the coat. I will then update this over the winter months as I have many further trips planned to Snowdonia and the Lake District.

For weekend walks in the brisk November air, the 700 fill goose down kept my core warm enough, even when gusts picked up along the ridge line. I appreciated small touches like the insulating cuffs that sealed out drafts. The DWR treated shell resisted light drizzle, and the jacket’s packability let me stow it easily in my daypack when the sun came out.

Layering the Eos over a fleece pullover and base layer, I stayed warm chopping wood for my fire pit at home without overheating from exertion. The fairly subdued colours that we chose also meant I could have a functional jacket that looks stylish around town. The Eclipse Blue jacket that my wife Alison chose was similarly understated.

When some snow flurries arrived in late November, the Eos became my trusty companion for winter hikes. The adjustable hem and hood sealed in warmth during an all-day trek across the Shropshire hills near Ludlow. The brushed fleece-lined hand pockets kept my fingers toasty when I stopped for photos. I appreciated the zippered chest pocket for tucking away smaller items securely.

Packing the Eos on a family camping trip, it compressed surprisingly small to fit in my backpack while still lofting up thickly for expedition warmth. The ‘treated’ down maintained its insulating ability through some wet weather on our walks. I did find myself wishing the jacket had pit zips for venting on steep climbs, but this is not a common option on down jackets.

Good for Beer Gardens

For evenings in the pub, the Eos delivered style and substance. It insulated well during sharp temperature drops at night in the beer garden whilst looking stylish enough to not make me feel like the local street urchin – probably not quite as stylish as my Rab Prosar, but close. The deeper collar and microfleece lining of the Eos kept winter chills off my neck and chin successfully.

Eos Niggles

In terms of niggles the only one that stands out is the lack of a zipped internal pocket. I know it has the external chest pocket, but I personally would like an internal one too, however this isn’t available on the Eos.

Rohan Eos – Our Verdict

After thoroughly testing the Rohan Eos down jacket in autumn and early-winter, I can confidently recommend it as a versatile outdoor insulation layer well-suited for UK conditions.

The premium 700 fill goose down provides impressive warmth without excess weight, while the DWR-treated shell resists light drizzle. Technical features like the adjustable hem and hood allow you to seal in heat during chilly conditions. I really like some of the small touches like the insulating cuffs and fleece-lined pockets. These add functionality for active pursuits like winter hiking and camping.

Meanwhile, the stylish fit and available colours allow the Eos to work just as well for everyday use around town. It offers substantial warmth for casual wear without looking overly technical. Given Rohan’s reputation for quality gear plus the Eos’s strong performance across a variety of activities and temperatures, this jacket is a sound choice for staying warm this UK winter, both on the trails and off.

While not fully waterproof, the Eos handles light moisture and offers good breathability. For the price, it provides excellent value as a winter-ready down jacket perfect for the variable conditions of the UK. If you’re looking to upgrade your outerwear with a premium down insulating layer this season, the Rohan Eos warrants a spot at the top of your list.

9Expert Score

The Rohan Eos is an excellent down jacket which looks good and performs well in all aspects of UK life in cold weather. If you can find it for under £200 in a sale (e.g. Black Friday) then I would be snapping it up faster than a dog eating hot mince!
